"Where's your game face Green?" ~ James Klipfel
A Senior at Saugus, Shelby says she is motivated to swim this year, because she is going to swim for at least three or four more years, and she wants to reach her personal bests, knowing that her coach next year will see her times.
Shelby believes a swimmer needs enthusiasm and dedication. "They both go together," she says. "You can't succeed at something unless you enjoy it. Swim takes hours and hours of dedication. You might as well be happy swimming back and forth in the pool rather than just going through the motions."
Shelby is inspired by her mom and dad. "They never really put any pressure on me. They've always just been really supportive," she says. And that support seems to work for her. While being an outstanding athlete, Shelby has also made strong relationships with her friends and family. She never misses a chance to watch a USC football game with her dad and sister, or to go surfing, then In N' Out on the way home. And when Shelby finishes her studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she says, as a result of her fondness of cooking, she would like to go on to culinary school.
As a Senior Captain, Shelby wants her fellow swimmers to all reach their personal bests while having the time of their lives doing something they love with friends and family. Shelby also wants her teammates to not give up. She says she "knows its hard to push yourself through a really hard workout or swim a race you haven't swam before. But eventually you'll see all your hard work and determination pay off."
